The perpetrators counterfeit anything they can monetize or otherwise benefit from. Experts in the Institute of Criminalistics in the field of technical examination of documents and in the field of examination of authenticity of the means of payment and securities encounter a variety of counterfeits of a different technical quality. In addition to the usual counterfeit securities and documents, they have also examined forged prescriptions for medicines, MOT certificates, maintenance logs, public transport tickets and meal vouchers.
1. Technical examination of securities
Within the scope of their forensic work, the experts verify authenticity of means of payment and securities (banknotes and coins, credit cards, cheques, stamps, postage stamps, etc.). For the objects examined, the experts not only determine their authenticity, but also the method used for their production (counterfeiting) as well as the material and equipment.

The experts have the state-of-the-art instrumentation at their disposal for the examination. For example, the Projectina device, which is used to verify the authenticity of the securities using UV radiation, or the HIROX microscope, which can be used to examine the sequence of writing strokes.
Another area of examination is the technical examination of documents, which includes examination of the authenticity or the manner in which documents were altered, printing techniques and material used, examination of stamps and seals, writing instruments, paper and other material.

This area also includes examination of texts with reduced legibility and specific material (glues, burnt papers), tears, cuts, methods of unauthorised opening of mail or determination of the relative age of documents.
