65 YEARS OF EXISTENCE (1958–2023)

1. Institute of Criminalistics

The Institute of Criminalistics is a professional police body with the nationwide competence which specializes in expert and crime scene investigation activities. Officially, the Institute was established on 12 December 1958 when the name of the Institute of Criminalistics was first mentioned in Order No. 166 of the Minister of the Interior. It is thus one of the oldest police units with a rich history. This year it will celebrate its 65th anniversary.

2. Forensic biology - trichology research

Currently, it is one of the expert institutes incorporated in the Register of Forensic Experts, Forensic Expert Offices and Forensic Expert Institutes kept by the Ministry of Justice of the Czech Republic in the following fields: criminalistics, electrical engineering, chemistry, handwriting examination and mechanical engineering. It participates in education and training of top specialists, publishes professional publications, creates methodologies for other specialised police units in the Czech Republic and it is also a scientific research institute with a remit in the field of forensic sciences.

3. Fingerprints – development of fingerprints

The Institute of Criminalistics became the first Czech police unit to engage in international cooperation. Since 30 March 1998, it has been a regular member of the European Network of Forensic Science Institutes (ENFSI). Czech experts are respected and recognised in the wider forensic world.

November 1, 2007 became a significant day in the history of the Institute. On that day, the Institute of Criminalistics received a Certificate of Accreditation after it had met the accreditation requirements of the standard in the field of expert activities and became one of the internationally recognized laboratories.
